The second part of the police interrogation was about my relationship with Xulhaz and friends. “Who was there?” “Who are Xulhaz’s friends?” “How many days have I known Xulhaz?” “Who are the people who go to his apartment? What are their names?” At one point the investigation officer said, “You know I can arrest you?” Sara apa [lawyer] was there and she said, “No Atif, they can’t arrest you. You are a witness, not a criminal and they also don’t have an arrest warrant.” She noticed that I was slowly getting scared. They asked a lot of questions. “Where is my address?” “Who am I with, who was I with, where do they live?” “Who are my relatives?” “Who are my parents?” “Where is my national ID card?” They asked me about who was there at Xulhaz’s apartment. Police showed me images of Xulhaz’s apartment and asked who are the people in these images and what are they doing there.

এরপর শুরু করছে ইন্টারভিউয়ের দ্বিতীয় অংশ। “ঐখানে কে কে ছিল?” “জুলহাজের সাথে কার কার পরিচয়?” “জুলহাজের সাথে আমার কতদিন পরিচয়?” “ওর বাসায় কে কে যেতো? তাদের নাম বলো।” পুলিশ আমাকে এক পর্যায়ে বলছে, “জানো আমি চাইলে তোমাকে গ্রেফতার করতে পারি?” সারা আপাতো [আইনজীবী] কথা বলতে পারে না যদি না আমি জিজ্ঞেস করি। সো যখন এই কথা বলছে, তখন সারা আপাই বলছে, “না আতিফ, ওরা তোমাকে গ্রেফতার করতে পারে না। কারণ তুমি একজন স্বাক্ষী, তুমিতো অপরাধী না এবং আমার মনে হয় না তাদের কাছে গ্রেফতারি পরোয়ানা আছে।” আমি যে আস্তে আস্তে ভয় পাচ্ছিলাম, সেটা সারা আপাও নোটিশ করতেছিল। কারণ তোমাকে যদি বলে- আমার কোথায় কি এড্রেস? কার সাথে আছি, কার সাথে ছিলাম, সে কোথায় থাকে? আমার আত্মীয় স্বজন কে? আমার বাপ-মা কে? আমার ন্যাশনাল আইডি কার্ড কোথায়? এইসবগুলিতো অলরেডি জিজ্ঞেস করছেই, তারপর আরো জিজ্ঞেস করছে, জুলহাজের বাসায় কে কে ছিল? জুলহাজের বাসার থেকে একটা ছবি নিয়া আসছে, এইটা কার ছবি, এইটা কে, ঐটা কে?

I was taken to the U.S. embassy the next day. I was accompanied by Sara apa [lawyer]. An FBI investigative officer named Frank interviewed me. I described the whole incident to him. I told him about how much I know about Xulhaz’s murder, my relationship with the community—with Xulhaz, and how long I have worked with the gay community.

পরেরদিন আমাকে আমেরিকান এম্বেসিতে নিয়া গেলো। সন্ধ্যার পরে নিয়ে গেছে, আমি আর সারা আপা [আইনজীবী]। পরে ফ্র্যাংক নামে এফবিআইয়ের একটা লোক ছিল সে আমাকে ইন্টারভিউ করছে। সে আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করছে, সব ঘটনা আমি বলছি যে, কীভাবে কি হইছে না হইছে, আমি কতটুকু জানি, কীভাবে জানি, কমিউনিটির সাথে কি সম্পর্ক, কতদিন যাবত কমিউনিটিতে কাজ করতেছি, এইগুলা সব কিছুই বলতেছিলাম।

I will never forget the day of that interview in my life. I remember every second of it. First I went up to the third floor. I crossed a long corridor to go to a room that had no source of light, except one light hanging over my head. There was a big table in the room covered by a red velvet tablecloth. I was sitting on one side and Chris was right in the middle. Sara apa [lawyer] was coming and going. Chris [FBI agent] interviewed me for almost 24 minutes... Oh sorry, it was 23 minutes! Then he asked me to sit there and left the room to discuss it with Frank [FBI agent]. He came back again. Then it was no longer an interview. It was an interrogation! I was asked about how Xulhaz was murdered. It was totally fucked up. I really want to forget the day but I can’t. I still remember how many minutes they interviewed me, where I was taken, what I was wearing, what Frank was wearing, and what color of dress Chris wore. I remember everything.

মানে ঐ দিনটা বা ঐ ইন্টারভিউটা আমি আমার লাইফে কখনো ভুলবো না, আমার এখনো মনে পড়ে যে তিন তলায় সিঁড়ি দিয়ে উঠলাম। তিন তলায় যাওয়ার পরে বড় একটা করিডোর ছিল। করিডোরের এক সাইডে আমাকে একটা রুমে নিয়ে গেছে, সেখানে অন্য কোনো লাইট ছিল না, শুধু একটা লাইট আমার মাথার উপর ঝুলতেছিল। বিশাল বড় একটা টেবিল, টেবিলের উপর লাল মখমল টাইপের একটা কাপড় ছিল, সাইডে এরকম কাঠ। তো আমি এই সাইডে বসা ছিলাম। ক্রিস [এফবিআই এজেন্ট] একদম মাঝে বসা ছিল। সারা আপা [আইনজীবী] আসা যাওয়ার মধ্যে ছিল। ক্রিস আমাকে অলমোস্ট ২৪ মিনিটের মত… সরি ২৩ মিনিটের মত ইন্টারভিউ করছে, তারপর বলছে যে, “তুমি এখানে বসো।” বলে ফ্র্যাংকের [এফবিআই এজেন্ট] সাথে কথা বলতে গেছে। ফ্র্যাংক তখন ক্রিসকে আবার পাঠাইছে। পাঠানোর পরে ঐটা আর ইন্টারভিউ ছিলো না, ঐটা ইন্টারোগেশন ছিল। কি কি হইছে, কি কি না হইছে পুরা ফাকড আপ পরিস্থিতি। এর জন্যই বললাম না ঐ দিনটার কথা ভুইলা যাইতে চাই বাট এই যে এখন যখন কথা বলতেছি, আমি নিজেও জানতাম না যে কত মিনিট ধরে ইন্টারভিউ নিছে সেটাও আমার মনে আছে। কোথায় কি গেছিলাম, আমি কি পরা ছিলাম, ফ্র্যাংক কি পরা ছিল, ক্রিস কি রঙের জামা পরা ছিল। সব মনে আছে।

EFAD: Why did they [FBI] need so many details? Didn't they get an autopsy report from the police... ATIF: I believe the FBI actually wanted to get the full picture of the incident. The FBI was wary of the Bangladesh Police investigation. The Bangladeshi police are easy to manipulate. Trust me, Efad… I saw a man dying… I saw with my own eyes… He was lying dead on the floor. When Tonoy was screaming… I was downstairs in the garage… His screaming gradually became dimmer… Xulhaz screamed once… No, more than once… He was screaming ‘amma, amma’... Then when I went upstairs, I realized Xulhaz’s mother was there when he was getting hacked. I experienced the whole scenario. Thank god, I didn’t see him getting hacked which his mother had witnessed. I pray to god that she forgets everything. How could a mother bear a scene like this… her own child whom she raised with so much love and care… to see him getting killed in front of her eyes.

ইফাদঃ তাদের [এফবিআই] এতো ডিটেইল দরকার ছিলো ক্যানো? তারা কি পুলিশের কাছ থেকে ময়নাতদন্তের প্রতিবেদন পায় নাই? আতিফঃ তারা আসলে ঘটনার পুরো ছবিটা পেতে চাচ্ছিলো। তারা হয়তো ধারণা করেছিল বাংলাদেশের পুলিশের কাছ থেকে খুব ভালো কিছু পাবে না। তাদের ম্যানিপুলেট করা খুব সহজ। ও আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করতেছিল... অনেস্টলি ইফাদ বিশ্বাস করো... তখন আমার মনে হচ্ছিল যে আমি একটা মানুষকে মরতে দেখতেছি... একটা মানুষ মরে পড়ে আছে... আমি নিজের চোখে দেখছি ওকে... তারা (জুলহাজ, তনয়) যখন চিল্লাচ্ছিল আমি তখন নিচে গ্যারেজের ঐ সাইডে ঐখানে ছিলাম। ওখানে বসে তনয়ের যে চিল্লানো, একটা মানুষের চিল্লাইতে চিল্লাইতে আস্তে আস্তে থেমে যাওয়াটা আমি শুনতে পাচ্ছিলাম। জুলহাজের চিৎকার আমি একবার... একবার না, জুলহাজের চিৎকার শুনছি একবার, আর আম্মা আম্মা বলতেছিল যখন... তখন বুঝি নাই কেনো, কিন্তু পরে যখন উঠে দেখলাম আন্টি রুমের বাহিরে, তখন বুঝতে পারছি যে আম্মা আম্মা করছিল কেনো। আমি আসলে ঐ পুরা সিনটা এক্সপেরিয়েন্স করছিলাম। থ্যাংক গড, লাইক আমাকে ভিজুয়ালি দেখতে হয় নাই, যেটা ওর মাকে দেখতে হইছে। এবং দোয়া করি ওর মা যাতে সব কিছু ভুলে যায়, নয়তো কোনো মানুষের পক্ষে আসলে ঐসব দেখার পরে… নিজের সন্তান, যাকে ছোটো থেকে বড় করছে, তার ওরকম অবস্থা হওয়াটা কোনোভাবেই কোনো মা সহ্য করতে পারে না।

We didn’t know if we would be able to come back from the Detective Branch (DB) office. The questions that the regular police didn’t get an answer for could have been asked in the DB office. Amber [friend] was there the whole time. She became like my sister. I can not explain how much… how… how much she helped me in this whole process. She sat there with me for hours. Then when they were talking to Frank [FBI agent], she took us out from behind, then changed three cars and dropped us where we were staying. Anyways, after talking to Sara apa [lawyer], I found out that, yes, we have to go to the DB police office. I was very nervous. I was afraid...I was 90 percent sure that if I go to the DB office, they will arrest me.

আমরা আসলে জানতাম না যে ডিবি অফিসে গেলে আমরা আর ফেরত আসবো কীনা, কারণ যে প্রশ্নগুলা তারা ওখানে উত্তর পায় নাই, চাইলে ডিবি অফিসে করতে পারে। তারপরে এমবার [বন্ধু] যে আমার সাথে ছিল, সে এখন আমার একরম বোন হয়ে গেছে, ও যে কি পরিমাণ... কি পরিমান... মানে কি পরিমান যে হেল্প করছে। সে আমাকে নিয়া ঘন্টার পর ঘন্টা গিয়া বইসা ছিল কোনো কাজ করে নাই। এরপরে ওরা যখন ফ্রাংকের [এফবিআই এজেন্ট] সাথে কথা বলতেছিল, তখন আমাদেরকে নিয়া পিছন দিয়ে বের হয়ে গেছে, তারপরে তিনটা গাড়ি চেঞ্জ করে যেখানে আমরা থাকতাম সেখানে আমাদেরকে ড্রপ করছে। পরে সারা আপার [আইনজীবী] সাথে কথাটথা বলার পরে জানতে পারলাম যে হ্যাঁ আমাদেরকে ডিবি অফিসে যেতে হবে... তো আমি খুব ইসে ছিলাম... মানে ভয়ে ছিলাম যে ডিবি অফিসে গেলে আমি জানি... মানে মোটামুটি ৯০% শিউর ছিলাম যে আমাকে এরেস্ট করবে।

The judge asked me, “Are you gay?” I didn’t respond immediately. Then he went on, “How do you do it? Are you top or bottom?” I have already heard questions like if I am gay or not and how do I have sex from other investigators. But I was surprised when the judge asked me, “Are you versatile?” It seemed a little... He even asked for my personal number. I said, “my number is provided in my case-related document.” He said, “Not that number, do you have anything personal?” I replied that I use only one cell number. At that time I was using only one SIM card. So it felt kind of weird. The judge later asked me, “When was the last time you had sex?” (laughing). I am smiling now, but I wasn’t in front of him. I was rather curious because a heterosexual man normally doesn’t have such in-depth knowledge or curiosity about gay sex in Bangladesh.

জাজ আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করছিল, “আপনি কি গে?” আমি কিছুই বলছিলাম না জাজের সাথে। “আচ্ছা, আপনারা কীভাবে কি করেন? আপনি টপ না বটম?” আমাকে জাজ জিজ্ঞেস করতেছে। আমি গে কীনা বা কীভাবে কি করি এই প্রশ্ন আমি আগে আরো শুনছি, তাই অবাক হই নাই। আমি টপ না বটম এটা বলে কিছুক্ষণ থেমে কলমটা ঘুরায়া ঘুরায়া তারপরে বলছে, “তাহলে কি আপনি ভার্সাটাইল?” তারপরে আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করতেছিল “আপনার পার্সোনাল নাম্বার আছে?” আমি বলছি, “পার্সোনাল ফোন নাম্বার তো দেয়াই আছে”। তারপরে বলছে যে “না, এটা না আর কোনো পার্সোনাল নাম্বার আছে?” আমি বলছি, “না, আমার একটাই নাম্বার।” তখন আমার নামে একটা সিমই রেজিস্ট্রেশন করা ছিল। আমার একটা অদ্ভুত অনুভুতি হলো। তো পরে আমাকে জিজ্ঞেস করতেছিল “লাস্ট আপনি কবে কার সাথে কি করছেন?” (হাহা) এখন হাসতেছি কিন্তু তখন হাসি পাচ্ছিল না, আমি একটু কিউরিয়াস ছিলাম যে একটা হেটারোসেক্সুয়াল মানুষের তো এইগুলা ডিপলি বোঝার বা জানারতো কথা না।

The police went to my house for address verification after my arrival in the U.S. He asked my mother when I would return to Bangladesh. My mother replied, “I don’t know”. He said my sexual practice is not accepted in religion. There was a lot of social policing. He even gave a card from a doctor to my mother for my mental treatment. My mother later called me and explained the whole situation.

আমার বাসায় এড্রেস ভেরিফিকেশনের জন্য পুলিশ গেছে আমি ইউএসএ-তে আসার পর। পুলিশ আমার মাকে জিজ্ঞেস করছে আমি বাংলাদেশে ফিরবো কবে। মা বলেছে, “আমি জানি না”। এরপর আমার মাকে খুব সোস্যাল পুলিশিং করলো। “এগুলা যে করে, এইগুলাতো ধর্মে নাই”, এই না, ঐ না। আরে প্রথমবার গেছে সে কার্ডও দিয়ে আসছে, জানো? কোথায় গেলে আমার চিকিৎসা করানো যাবে, সেই কার্ড আমার মাকে দিয়া আসছে। আম্মু পরে আমাকে ফোন দিয়ে জানাইলো যে, পুলিশ আসছিলো ঠিকানা ভ্যারিফিকেশন করতে।
