Guyana Exercise Book Cover with Burnham's Image

DESCRIPTION
This notebook contains diagrams of mitochondrial DNA by Mahendra Bahadur when he was a student at the University of Guyana in the late 1970s. On the cover of the Guyana Exercise Book is his name, handwritten his by his wife Kalowtie, and the image of Forbes Burnham, whose dictatorship created the politically and economically repressive conditions that the Bahadur family fled when they came to America in 1981. As part of the cult of personality that helped sustain Burnham's rule, his image was everywhere emblazoned. The family brought the notebook with them when they emigrated to the United States.
