About the Collection

Collection Description
The Idaho Penitentiary System files of Ashar Singh, including items related to his 1915 conviction for "attempting an unnatural crime upon the person of a boy at Burley [Idaho]." An enclosed article indicates that the attempted crime had caused an "uprising by Burley last Sunday when the Hindoo population was ordered to leave town." In several items, Ashar Singh's first name is misspelled as "Asher" or "Ashur." These prison files are comprised of a conviction notice, mugshot, body diagram, agent designation waiver, and 1916 notification of pardon hearing. This collection also features his FBI record, updated in 1935 with two more arrests in the state of California.
