What SAADA Means To Me
DECEMBER 21, 2014
When I received Priscilla’s email, at first I didn’t realize she was “Pinky,” my dad’s college girlfriend. In her email she told me, “Our dates were those that didn't cost money: playing bridge, cooking curry and daal at his apartment, attending football games.” These words echoed the stories he told me. And they made me cry. Pinky had found my interview with my father on the SAADA website just six months after he died of cancer. Her memories, like his, were so crisp, so evocative. I was almost transported to a smoky dorm room with a deck of cards.
SAADA builds bridges between past and present. Its resources transport us to worlds that would surely be lost without the dedication of its staff and volunteers. SAADA preserves the legacy of rich communities of risk-takers, people who pushed beyond the boundaries of the known to create new lives in America. SAADA honors these lives.
This work needs our support. Please join me in making a commitment to SAADA's future. Your donation of $120 (or just $10/month) supports the preservation and care of one item in the archive for one year.
