Preserving South Asian American Experiences of 1984

NOVEMBER 5, 2014

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the anti-Sikh violence of 1984 in India.

We're honored to have received a grant from The Sikh Coalition for "Bridging Gaps: Preserving South Asian American Experiences of 1984."

SAADA will launch a 9-month project to collect, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to rare archival materials from across the U.S. related to transnational activism, mobilization, and remembrance of the anti-Sikh violence of 1984.

Beginning in 1984, and in the thirty years since, there have been many efforts originating in the United States to document atrocities, mobilize communities, and remember victims. Yet, there has never been a project to systematically collect archival materials related to these efforts. SAADA, an organization with a mission to create a more inclusive society by giving voice to South Asian Americans through documenting, preserving and sharing stories that represent their unique and diverse experiences, is well-positioned to collect these now rare and endangered materials as well as to publicize and raise awareness about this important history to the broader South Asian American community.
