"Kamala Harris is breaking barriers for Tamil Americans. But we need more." Written on Behalf of Maynmai Collective

DESCRIPTION
This article, for which Maya McCoy was a principle writer, was prepared by Maynmai and published on Medium. It discusses the progress made in the arena of representation, by having Kamala Harris, an Indian Tamil and Jamaican American woman elected as Vice President of the United States. The article goes into why this historical event is not sufficient in addressing legacies of violence and oppression that the United States is part of. Looking at the Supreme Court case Department of Homeland Security v. Thuraisiggiam, the article presents the question of whether Vice President Harris' identities will translate into justice and accountability for the communities she comes from. This article is discussed during Maya McCoy's interview for the SAADA Archival Creators Fellowship project on Ilankai Tamil Feminism.
