Ashraf Ellison Passport

DESCRIPTION
Uganda refugees were not permitted to take much out of the country, so most of the materials that tell their stories are official documents, such as this passport. After independence of Uganda, Ashraf had the choice to obtain Ugandan citizenship or keep her British citizenship. Generally, women maintained British citizenship, and men took Ugandan citizenship - this allowed diversity within the family, and access to business opportunities for men as citizens of the new nation. This decision also became important during the expulsion, because it determined where a refugee was allowed to settle. Ashraf easily gained resettlement in the UK.
