Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965



DESCRIPTION
Record of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, also known as the Hart–Celler Act or the 1965 Immigration Act. The law—signed by Speaker of the House John W. McCormack and Vice President Hubert Humphrey and including a handwritten note that reads "Lyndon B. Johnson approved" with time and location—abolished the previous "quota" system and removed discrimination against South Asians and other demographics, giving preference to reunifying families and skilled professionals.
